Treatment of the Electroconvulsive Therapy-Resistant Depression


Abstract
Electroconvulsive theraphy(ECT) has long been recognized as a highly effective treatment for major depression but with the introduction of tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine for major depression but with the introduction of tricyclic
antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, utilization of ECT decreased sharply. ECT was considered as a treatment of last resort and used in patients who failed to respond to adequate trials of antidepressant medication. But not all
patients
respond to an initial course of ECT and treatment of the ECT-resistant patients was a topic that had received little attention.
This article is focused on the possible approaches for the treatment of the depressive patients who do not respond to ECT.
